Haliburton Off Road 200 km

Fall 2000

Our first stop was in Fenelon Falls (78km) at, you guessed it, Tim Horton's, where we aged considerably waiting for the staff to handle the lunch time crowd. It was in Fenelon Falls that we started to realise we certainly weren't going to break any time trial records. Riding an off-road surface increases rolling resistance, requires occasional dismounting to skirt the worst puddles, and photo opps at old mills and river rapids!

With renewed energy, clear blue skies, and warming fall air, we pushed on from F.F. shortly after noon and arrived in Lindsay (95km) with Larry having experienced two flats by that point.

We then headed downwind and downhill on the paved shoulder of Hwy 35 in tight time trial fashion to River Road. This pretty section took us along much of the south shore of Lake Scugog to Blackstock (135Km) for another quick refuelling stop. At this point we realised we were certainly in for a couple of hours of night riding. (Recommendation: Don't ride this route after the switch back to Standard Time. Dusk comes all too early).
